In a fantastic move towards a greener future, Ameresco Inc., a frontrunner in the realm of renewable energy and energy efficiency, recently announced it is partnering with Envision Energy to take on a substantial battery energy storage project. Atlantic Green, their client in this venture, has entrusted them with the duty of erecting the Cellarhead project — a 300-MW energy storage venture that has a gigantic capacity of up to 624 MWh. This Cellarhead initiative will be connected to the National Grid's Cellarhead sub-station, thereby fortifying the energy security and reliability of the UK.
The teams are expected to transfer this unique concept to concrete reality by kick-starting the construction later this year. The grand completion and network channeling are targeted for late 2026. Besides boasting a staggering 624-MWh energy capacity, the prospective Cellarhead undertaking will play a key role in making the UK’s dream of carbon neutrality a reality. It aims to increase clean energy generation, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and curtail carbon emissions significantly.
Atlantic Green was brought to life in 2021, a combined venture of two entrepreneurs from Nofar Energy and Interland Group. Positioned as a UK platform, the company invests, develops, and operates large-scale standalone battery energy storage systems across the UK. With a clear vision of creating a 2-GW battery energy storage capacity, Atlantic Green's ambitious Cellarhead project is significant for their business development and larger sustainability agenda. For this revolutionary project, Ameresco has entered into an all-encompassing EPC and O&M contract which includes hefty assignments such as battery supply, balance of plant, warranty, and availability guarantees. The jaw-dropping full EPC price stands at a sizeable $249 million or around 196.5 million GBP. To crown the deal, Tier 1 OEM Envision Energy will provide the BESS along with related services and equipment warranties.
Come mid-2026, Ameresco and Atlantic Green hope to have the BESS up and running and successfully grid-linked. On completion, Atlantic Green would command ownership and manage the BESS as an energy asset.
