April 2024 Sees a Decline in Solar Monthly Market Value to 3.795 Cents per Kilowatt Hour

In April 2024, the monthly market value of solar power dropped to 3.795 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh). This information was derived from calculations made by grid operators. A year earlier in March 2023, this figure stood at about 5 cents/kWh. The last time the solar monthly market value hit such a low was in 2020. The grid operators disclosed the spot market price for April at 6.236 cents/kWh. Hence, the gap between the spot market price and monthly market value for solar rose once more in April.


Wind energy's monthly market values also witnessed a downfall. Onshore wind power was priced at 4.8 cents/kWh, down from about 5.5 cents/kWh the previous month. The monthly market value for offshore wind electricity took a hit in April 2024, coming in at 5.288 cents/kWh. This represents a decrease compared to December, when offshore wind power cost was roughly 5.9 cents/kWh.


The market value of solar power is crucial for all involved in the direct marketing supported by the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). The monthly market value for solar power reflects the average earnings from solar power at the exchange that could be achieved through direct marketing in the respective month. If this market value falls below the EEG compensation, the difference is financed by the transmission system operator from the EEG levy account.


April also witnessed instances with negative electricity prices lasting four hours or more. During such periods, operators with plants commissioned from April 2016 onwards lose their entitlement to the market premium.
