EVLO's Groundbreaking Battery Energy Project Makes U.S. Debut

2024-09-04

EVLO Energy Storage Inc. (EVLO), a subsidiary of Hydro-Québec known for its fully integrated Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), has successfully commissioned its first utility-scale BESS project in the United States. Located in Troy, Vermont, this 3 MW/12 MWh installation marks a significant milestone as EVLO enters the U.S. market.

Strategic Energy Storage for Peak Demand

The newly commissioned BESS is engineered to store energy during periods of excess production, ensuring that power is available when demand peaks. This system plays a critical role in stabilizing the variability of renewable energy generation, offering substantial benefits to local utility consumers by enhancing grid reliability.

Collaboration with the DOE and Vermont Utilities

In addition to its primary function, the Troy project serves as a live testing platform for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Sandia National Laboratories. The data collected from this project will provide valuable insights into how battery storage can support the expansion of renewable energy and improve the integration of renewables into the New England power grid.

The project integrates 16 EVLO 1000 units and four Power Conversion System (PCS) platforms, all managed by the advanced EVLOGIX Energy Management System (EMS). EVLO, in collaboration with Vermont utilities such as the Vermont Electric Cooperative, which services the Troy area, will oversee and maintain the BESS under a 20-year service agreement.

A Milestone in Renewable Energy Integration

This innovative project is EVLO's first BESS installation in the U.S. that has been commissioned, installed, and is fully operational. It underscores the growing importance of battery storage and highlights EVLO's expanding influence beyond its Canadian and European roots.

Sonia St-Arnaud, President and CEO of EVLO, expressed her enthusiasm: "We are excited to partner with visionary utilities like those in Vermont who are leading the charge in the energy transition. A robust battery energy storage sector is essential to maximizing renewable energy use. We are proud to contribute EVLO's expertise in grid and BESS technology to this pivotal project, the first of many in the U.S."

Rebecca Towne, CEO of Vermont Electric Cooperative, also shared her vision for the project: "We hope this initiative will demonstrate the critical role of battery energy storage in delivering more reliable and sustainable power to our communities. As we prepare for increased renewable capacity, this project exemplifies the synergy and innovation needed to strengthen the regional grid."
