Glimpse of Hope for Our Feathered Friends in Solar Parks, Reveal Chilean Researchers

2024-07-23

Chilean scholars from the School of Environmental and Sustainability Engineering at Universidad Mayor have made an interesting discovery: native birds have found sanctuary within solar parks.

Unveiling Bird Behavior within a Solar Paradise

The research was conducted at the 10.8 MW La Colonia solar park in Buin, Chile. This project is a collaboration between IM2 Solar Chile, a local developer, and Enel Green Power, the renewable energy division of the Italian energy company, Enel. Over six months, the research team closely monitored the activities of several indigenous bird species.

They found compelling evidence that the solar park provides conditions conducive to the survival and growth of these bird species. “[Solar panels] indeed impact the ecosystem positively through the cooling shade they offer, the refuge effect for the growth of herbaceous plants, and the fruitful resting of the soil, a fact backed by diverse scientific studies," the scholars explained.

Creating a Safe Haven for Avian Species

César Mattar, the principal investigator and author of the groundbreaking study, shared that they developed a management blueprint aimed at bird preservation. This scheme considered various aspects, particularly the species' breeding patterns within the study perimeter and how these cycles align with the solar plant's maintenance activities.

“Given the striking absence of human intervention that could disrupt the ecosystem, the solar panels seem to serve as shields for the nesting of some species,” Mattar revealed. “Additionally, the prohibition of machinery and combustion engines prevents soil and environmental pollution. With a closed periphery, the park doubles as a secure enclave against other potential predatory species.”

Positive Environmental Impact

This research highlights a positive environmental impact of solar parks beyond their renewable energy benefits. By providing a safe haven for native birds, these solar parks contribute to local biodiversity and ecological health. The study underscores the importance of integrating environmental conservation into renewable energy projects, ensuring that the transition to sustainable energy also supports wildlife and natural habitats.
