QLD Spends $179m Investment on Expanding Statewide Battery Network

Thanks to funding from the Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund, we will soon see the installation of 12 new local network-connected batteries across Queensland. These batteries will help us make the most of our abundant renewable resources and further strengthen our electricity distribution network.

But that's not all! This investment also includes the installation of two flow batteries, manufactured right here in Queensland. By supporting our local battery industry, we are not only creating jobs and boosting our economy but also creating a proving ground for innovative technology. These flow batteries will pave the way for future battery programs and help us develop sustainable pathways toward a greener future.

The success of stage one of this program has already been remarkable. We have seen the installation of five batteries in Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Toowoomba, Townsville, and Yeppoon. These batteries have been a game-changer, supporting our energy network during times of peak demand. Each battery can power an average home for more than a year! Just imagine the positive impact this is having on the environment and our electricity bills.

Now, we are eagerly moving into stage two. Construction is underway for 12 batteries in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Emerald, Mundubbera, Gladstone, Howard, Toowoomba, Raby Bay, Morayfield, and Bribie Island in the Brisbane area. These new additions will further enhance our renewable energy capabilities and ensure that Queensland remains at the forefront of solar power.

Looking ahead, stage three will bring an additional 12 batteries with a capacity of 4MW/8MWh. We are currently scouting locations, and potential sites include Mooloolaba, Runaway Bay, Cornubia, Jimboomba, Woodridge, Yatala, Barcaldine, Dalby Central, Glenella, Toowoomba, Manchester, and Maryborough. These batteries will play a vital role in achieving our goal of 70% renewable energy by 2030 and ultimately reaching Net Zero Emissions by 2050.

And let's not forget about stage four! This stage will involve the trial of two flow batteries, with Burrum Heads and Ipswich being considered as the prime locations. This exciting development will push the boundaries of battery technology and open up new possibilities for a sustainable energy future.

Queensland is leading the way when it comes to rooftop solar. Our state has the highest rate of rooftop solar anywhere in Australia, and it's only fitting that our energy network keeps up with this tremendous growth. Premier Miles emphasized that this battery program is crucial to our success in achieving our renewable energy targets and creating a better future for all Queenslanders.
