Tax Credit and State Rebate Support Superior Wisconsin Fire Department's Solar Project

2024-03-06

In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Superior Wisconsin Fire Department partnered with a developer to successfully install a state-of-the-art 153.1 kWh solar array on its rooftop. This monumental achievement was recently recognized when President Joe Biden paid a visit to the fire department and its new solar infrastructure on January 25, 2024.

The implementation of this solar array aligns with the fire department's commitment to enhancing the environmental sustainability of its operations, all while optimizing its budget allocation. The estimated offset of approximately 267,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide emissions each year is a remarkable feat that is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by an impressive 145 acres of forest annually.

Thanks to generous federal and state programs, the fire department's municipal account is now reaping significant savings. By taking advantage of an elective pay tax credit, the department was able to receive a credit of 40% of the total project cost. On top of that, Wisconsin's renowned Focus on Energy program granted the fire department a substantial $18,000 rebate.

The Focus on Energy program is an extensive initiative that caters to a diverse range of accounts including residential, commercial, nonprofit, and other entities interested in implementing renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions. Eligible technologies encompass solar power, insulation, heating and cooling systems, smart thermostats, and many more.

With an eye towards the future, the fire department has laid out ambitious plans to transition to an electric vehicle (EV) truck within the next three to five years. To support this endeavor, Cedar Creek has collaborated with the municipal water, light, and power company to secure a discounted charging rate specifically for the fire department's EV. This invaluable partnership ensures that the fire department can seamlessly incorporate electric vehicles into their fleet, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.

This groundbreaking installation marks a significant milestone for Superior, Wisconsin as it becomes the city's inaugural municipal solar project. The fire department's dedication to renewable energy and sustainable practices sets an admirable example for other departments and communities across the nation. With proactive measures like these, we can collectively strive towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.
