The Balancing Act of Building an Electricity Grid Fit for the Future

2024-06-06

Australians today are living in a time of unprecedented change in our energy systems and our relationship with energy as consumers. Climate change is bringing warmer temperatures and more frequent and extreme weather events. This means that more energy is needed to heat and cool our homes and workplaces, and our distribution networks need to be more resilient to withstand storms, fires, and floods.

The increased use of renewable energy technologies is transforming our energy systems. Not only do they reduce emissions, but they also give Australians the opportunity to actively participate in the market rather than just passively consume. We are seeing an increasing electrification of our homes, industry, and transportation. In Victoria, this trend will accelerate when the ban on new gas connections in homes comes into effect in the new year. The number of electric vehicles is also increasing, which means more electricity and more charging options are needed.

Fundamental changes in the way we live, work, play, and learn—driven and enabled by new technologies—are impacting energy demand. One important trend is that more and more people are working from home, leading to higher energy demand in our homes during the day.

All of this has significant implications for our electricity distribution networks, such as how much energy we need to supply and how, where, and when it is distributed to our businesses, schools, hospitals, and homes. Constant innovation is needed to ensure grids can cope with the increasingly complex and demanding systems they support today and in the future. Our distributed energy resources—from centralized power generation plants to rooftop solar, batteries, smart appliances, electric vehicles, and future innovations—must be integrated in a safe, efficient, flexible, and equitable way to benefit everyone.

Every five years, distribution system operators across the country must prepare proposals outlining their plans and investments for the next five-year period. The proposals are submitted to the Australian Energy Regulator for approval as part of what is known as a Regulatory Reset. The proposals are currently being finalized for the period 2026-2031.

The dynamic energy landscape that will evolve over the next five years coincides with a cost-of-living crisis that will increase the pressure on cost management to keep energy affordable for all. To reconcile all competing priorities, future network planning must be based on consultation with customers and take into account the full range of views on future electricity demand and how networks should be operated and developed. This includes urban, suburban, rural, and regional residents, high and low income, young and old, and the full range of abilities, including the most vulnerable, because no one should be left behind as the system evolves and transitions to renewable energy.

Integrating ACE Battery's Grid Energy Storage Systems

In the face of these challenges, integrating advanced energy storage solutions is crucial for building a resilient and efficient grid. ACE Battery, a leader in energy storage technology, offers cutting-edge grid energy storage systems designed to support the evolving energy landscape.

ACE Battery's Grid Energy Storage Systems: Our advanced battery systems are engineered to store excess energy generated by renewable sources, ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply. These systems are critical for managing the variable nature of renewable energy and supporting grid stability.

Key Features and Benefits for C&I Energy Storage System:

  • Supporting Renewable Energy Integration: By incorporating ACE Battery's grid energy storage systems, distribution networks can better manage the integration of renewable energy sources. This not only enhances grid reliability but also supports the broader goal of transitioning to a sustainable energy future.

Future-Proofing the Grid with Customer Insights

As part of this effort, Monash University's Emerging Technologies Research Lab recently conducted an innovative study to understand future trends in customer behavior. Researchers worked with 36 households and analyzed 1,325 responses from customer surveys to create the Future Home Demand Report. The report, released last week, shows that the way people in Victoria consume and manage energy is fundamentally changing and identified 51 specific trends that will impact Victoria's future energy needs. Key trends include increasing home care, rising energy demand to support study and work from home, and increased use of electric vehicles.

The research findings will inform our future business and investment planning. Among other things, it will help us help vulnerable customers, protect our communities' energy supply, predict demand and energy growth, set network tariffs, connect customers, and develop smarter demand management programs.

For distribution system operators like us, research like this provides important indicators of where we need to focus our efforts and investment to evolve and future-proof the distribution network to keep pace with customers' changing needs. Grid forecasting and investment planning has always been a balancing act, but in such a fast-changing energy market, the stakes are high and input from our customers will help us get on the right track.

By leveraging insights from customer behavior studies and integrating advanced energy storage solutions from ACE Battery, we can build a resilient and efficient grid that meets the needs of all Australians while supporting the transition to renewable energy.
