Repeated Battery-Related Blazes Plague Solar Firm in Deutschland

2024-08-28

A string of battery fires has plagued Suncycle, a notable German firm specializing in solar energy and storage services, located in the Federal State of Thuringia. The most recent blaze—the third in just two months—called emergency fire services into action on Sunday, August 11, due to a lithium battery conflagration. Authorities are once again considering a technical flaw as the likely culprit behind these recurrent fires.

A String of Battery Fires: The Latest Incident

“The batteries were only temporarily on site, waiting to be discarded,” stated Christian Straub, the managing director of Suncycle. He added, “Multiple manufacturers supply us with batteries, hence, I regretfully don't have more specific details.” Unlike the previous incidents in June, this latest fire impacted a batch of batteries but didn't involve any container. Straub emphasized, “This fact resulted in appreciably less damage this time.”

Immediate Response and Safety Concerns

Upon responding to the scene, local firefighters reported that clouds of smoke and toxic fumes lightly injured an employee, according to their Facebook update. Germany's press agency, dpa, published a story stating that this injured worker used a forklift to evacuate the blazing storage unit from its location, aiming to prevent the fire from spreading. According to the fire brigade, the cost of damages is estimated at a substantial 30,000 euros.

Public Safety Measures: Smoke Advisory for Residents

Due to the dense plume of smoke, authorities released an advisory urging residents to keep their windows and doors shut to avoid smoke inhalation. This caution remained in effect until the following Monday.

A Troubling Pattern: Previous Incidents and Their Impact

This most recent fire marks the third incident since June 7th involving battery storage units at the Suncycle premises. The initial fire led to damages estimated at a staggering 700,000 euros, accompanied by a similar toxic air alert for locals.

The second fire, which occurred on June 30th, consumed a battery container. Firefighters opted to let it burn out in a controlled manner due to the toxic hydrofluoric acid produced during their previous extinguishing effort. This acid-forming reaction led to costly disposal procedures for the contaminated water. Unfortunately, no figures regarding the damages from the second fire have been released, and further insights regarding the third blaze are yet to be unveiled.
